Snowy Owl Window Panel

Needing insulation from Arctic temperatures, snowy owls have a lot of feathers. This makes them one of the heaviest owl species in North America.

The Snow Owl Window Panel is a glowing representation of the winter evenings in the north. With warm lavender tones, this stained glass window panel shines brightly in your kitchen or office window.

We create this piece of glass art using a combination of fused glass designs, along with traditional stained glass techniques. We shape the pieces and use enamel detailing to create a lifelike bird for your home.

How it’s Made:

We create the Snowy Owl Window Panel using multiple steps. First, we cut the lavender shift glass to size for the background. This special glass changes colour from fluorescent lighting to sunlight, from a light blue tone to a warm lavender colour.

Next, we add a powdered glass shading for the sky, and white powdered glass for the snowy foreground. We fire the background to set the powders so they aren’t disturbed by adding the layers of glass for the owl.

While we fire the background in the kiln, we cut and shape each of the pieces for the bird. We use various types of grinders to achieve the perfect shape. Once we clean the glass pieces, we paint the background design and set aside to allow to dry. The colour in the Snowy Owl Window Panel is the glass itself, therefore will never fade or wash away. We arrange the pieces in layers to mimic the 3-dimensional effect for the bird.

We fire the pieces just enough to allow a textured contour to the surface of the glass. This makes a delightfully touchable piece of art. During the kiln firing, we anneal the gas which relieves internal stresses within the glass.  This creates a stronger and more durable piece of glass.

Once the glass cools, we cut the coloured border and wrap each piece in a copper foil. Next, the pieces are soldered together. Lastly, we add a lead border for a clean and crisp finish.

Each panel in the Birds of a Feather Collection hang from approximately 3 feet of sturdy chain. We recommend hanging your stained glass window using hooks in or above the window frame. Suction cups are not recommended.
