Details:

The curving lines of the vibrant red fused glass Poppy Bowl are an immediate draw for your eye, and for your fingertips. The texture of the overlapping glass petals and the gentle bumps of black seeds are delightfully touchable.

Measuring approximately 9″ in diameter with a depth of 2″, we enjoy this vessel as a beautiful centrepiece on the dinner table or coffee table, or a warm feeling bowl to hold fruit on your counter. The Poppy Bowl glints in the sun, simply as a piece of gorgeous art, in any room. It makes the perfect gift for the person who has everything.

How’s It Made?

We create each bowl by hand in our studio in rural Manitoba. As a result, each of the petals have slight variations. We begin by cutting each petal from a sheet of red glass. We shape and buff the edges of the petals to a silky smoothness. Once the petals are washed and dried, we place them into the kiln in an overlapping pattern. Lastly, we arrange the black glass frits in the centre for the poppy seeds.

We first fuse the bowl flat to ensure the petals and seeds are fused, or melted, together. Once the design cools, we remove from the kiln and inspect for any flaws. After we clean and dry the piece again, we return it to the kiln to be slumped into the bowl shape. The flat piece is placed onto a ceramic mold, and as the glass heats, it sags into the bowl shaped mold, holding the shape when it cools.

This fused glass artwork is kiln-fired and annealed, decreasing internal stresses. This results in better strength and durability of the fused glass bowl. This way, you can be confident that you will enjoy its beauty for many years to come.
