Details:

The Hummingbird Window Panel is a sweet representation of the smallest migrating bird. This Ruby Throated Hummingbird is enjoying vibrant fuchsia flowers on its daily journey. It is an ideal gift for bird lovers and art lovers alike!

We create this piece of glass art using a combination of fused glass design, along with traditional stained glass techniques. Hand shaped 3-dimensional pieces create a delightful lifelike bird for your home.

How it’s Made:

We create the Hummingbird Window Panel using multiple steps. First, we cut the clear glass to size for the background. Next, we cut each of the pieces for the bird by hand and shape them to fit. We use various types of grinders to achieve the perfect shape. Once we clean the glass pieces, we paint the background design and set aside to allow to dry. The colour in the Hummingbird is the glass itself. Therefore, the colour can never fade, wash off, or peel.

We create the stamens of the fuchsia flowers by using a torch to pull thin glass strings, then break them to length and hold them in the flame to create a bulb. Then, we fire the straight strings just to a warm enough temperature to give the strings a gentle curve.

We arrange all of the pieces in layers to create the 3-dimensional effect for the bird, giving a lovely sun-catching texture.

We fire the pieces just enough to allow a textured contour to the surface of the glass. This allows for a delightfully touchable piece of art. During the kiln firing, we anneal the glass which relieves internal stresses within the glass.  This creates a stronger and more durable piece of glass.

Once we cool the Hummingbird Window Panel, we cut the coloured border and wrap each piece in a copper foil. Next, we solder all of the pieces together. Lastly, we add a lead border for a clean and crisp finish.

Hanging Instructions:

Each panel in the Birds of a Feather Collection hangs from approximately 3 feet of sturdy chain. We recommend hanging your stained glass window using hooks in or above the window frame. Suction cups are not recommended.
