Letters to Santa, the vibrant colours of a string of holly, and a welcoming wreath on the door: it’s always nice to come home for the holidays. The Home Sweet Home Lantern will keep your heart home, even when you can’t be.

Measuring approximately 6″ x 6″ by 11″ in height, the fused glass Home Sweet Home Lantern is a perfect size to enjoy for indoor home decor. A sweet centrepiece for the dining table, this handmade focal point will surely spark some warm conversation. With each side a unique detailed design, the lantern can be viewed from any angle.

Alternatively, you might display the lantern on your floor or end table as an accent piece, or as outdoor decor on the patio or step to welcome winter guests.

How it’s made:

We create the Home Sweet Home Lantern in multiple steps. First, we cut and polish the glass to the correct size for the lantern pieces. We cut the mailbox from sheet glass and use a glass enamel for the mailbox post. We add glass frits for the garland, and glass powder for the snow. The panel is kiln-fired to melt the glass elements to the background, leaving a contoured texture to the surface. When the design has cooled, we add additional enamels for the fine details, including the letters to Santa, and the driveway and evergreens. Then, we return the panel to the kiln for a low temperature firing to sinter the enamels into the surface of the glass.

For the reverse side of the Home Sweet Home Lantern, we first cut a slab of clay, creating the texture of the door in the slab. We let the slab dry, ensuring it remains perfectly flat without losing any of the texture. Using glass frits, we cover the texture, then top the frits with sheet glass cut and polished to size. We place the mold and glass into the kiln, casting the glass around the texture. When the glass cools, it retains the texture from the mold. We remove the glass and clean it, then place a wreath onto the door, returning them to the kiln for a low-temperature firing to fuse the two elements together.

Lastly, we create a three layer silk screen design, to print three layers of different colours of enamels. We first print the red and green colours, then top them with the black detailing, allowing each colour to dry fully between prints. Then, the glass is placed into the kiln for a low-temperature firing to sinter the enamels into the surface of the glass. This ensures the design is permanent, and the colours will never fade or wash off.

Each time we fire the glass, we anneal it to strengthen the glass for durability. You can be sure to enjoy your Home Sweet Home Lantern for many years to come.
