How’s It Made?

Handcrafted from art glass, we create the Frameless Pelican Window Panel using multiple steps. First, we cut and polish the clear glass to the appropriate size. Next, we create the background gradient and rising sun using powdered glass. We fire the background in the kiln to ensure the powder isn’t disturbed when we add the next layer of glass. 

Once the background has cooled, we create the pelican using glass powders. The glass art returns to the kiln for a contour firing to create a raised texture, giving depth to the art. Lastly, when the piece has cooled again, we add the detailing with coloured enamels. The details include the beak, eyes, and feet, the wooden post, as well as the wing details. We return the piece to the kiln for a final firing to sinter the enamels into the surface of the glass.

Because the colour is the glass itself, you won’t ever have to worry about the colour fading or washing off. During the firings, the glass is annealed. In other words, the strength and durability of the glass is increased, so you know it will last for as long as you own the artwork.
