The vibrant Cardinal is always a delight to see. Keep your cardinal sightings in mind with the fused glass Cardinal Lantern. This cardinal perches amongst the boughs of the cedar tree, with glass cast from live cedar branches for the most realistic texture.

Measuring approximately 6″ x 6″ by 11″ in height, the Cardinal Lantern is a perfect size to enjoy for indoor home decor. It is a delightful choice to display as a tabletop centrepiece for seasonal gatherings. With each side a unique detailed design, the lantern can be viewed from any angle. Alternatively, display the lantern easily on the floor as an accent piece, or as outdoor decor on the patio or step to welcome winter guests.

How it’s Made:

We create the Cardinal Lantern using multiple steps. First, we created clay texture molds using live cedar boughs pressed into the clay. We use glass powders and glass frits to colour the design, then fire the glass on the clay to create the textured cast glass cedar panels for this lantern.

Next, we cut the cardinal birds from a vibrant red sheet glass. Once the birds are ground to shape, we arrange glass frits for the background design. We kiln fire the individual panels of each of our lanterns. During the firing process, the glass heats and the sheet glass and frits fuse to the clear glass. We fire glass to a temperature to ensure a textured finish, allowing the contoured shape of the birds. 

Once the glass has cooled, we paint the black mask on the bird, along with detailing to the wings. Then, the panels return to the kiln for a low temperature firing to sinter the enamels into the surface of the glass, making a permanent design. While the glass fires, we anneal it to strengthen the glass for durability. You can be sure to enjoy your lantern decor for many years to come.
