Details:
Have you ever watched a butterfly fluttering, and wondering where it was headed? Bring innocence and light to your home and garden with the fused glass Butterfly Lantern. The intricate details capture the beauty and delicacy of this magnificent creature.
Front and back panels show sparkling textured glass, cast in the shape of butterflies in the yard. The front showing a single brilliant purple butterfly, and the back showing an orange and blue butterfly. The sides of this indoor/outdoor lantern show milkweed, blooming a delightful pink.
Measuring approximately 6″ x 6″ by 11″ in height, the Butterfly Lantern is a perfect size to enjoy for indoor home decor. For example, you can display the lantern as a tabletop centrepiece, paired perfectly with this LED candle. With each side a unique detailed design, the lantern can be viewed from any angle, and is sure to be a conversational piece. Similarly, you can easily display the lantern on the floor as an accent piece, or as outdoor decor on the patio or in the sunroom at the cottage.

How’s It Made?
We create the Butterfly Lantern using multiple steps for each of the paired sides. For the textured sides of the lantern, we prepare a casting mold with a spray to allow the glass to release from the ceramic mold. Next, we layer coloured glass frits onto the texture on the mold. Carefully layering the colours to shape the butterfly features, while ensuring the colours do not react with each other. Once the colours frits are placed, we carefully top the frits with a piece of sheet glass, cut to size and polished. Then, the casting mold is placed into the kiln and fired to fuse the frits and sheet glass together.
For the opposite sides, we hand paint the stalks of the milkweed using glass enamels. When the enamel has dried, we carefully arrange the pink flower heads for each stalk. Last, we add a small butterfly using powdered glass.
Once all of the pieces are arranged, we carefully place the glass into the kiln. We fire the panels at a moderate temperature to ensure the glass frits round slightly and the enamels are sintered into the surface of the glass.
Because the colours are the glass itself, and the enamels are fused into the glass, they can never wash off or fade. During the firing process, we anneal the glass to strengthen it for durability. Because of this, you can be sure to enjoy your Butterfly Lantern decor for many years to come.
